How to Change the World

Notes from “How to Change the World”

How Public Resources can be abused:

-Because there is no entity rationing or protecting the property or resource

there is a rational decision to abuse the resource.

**Public fishing pond example, if everyone is going to over fish it’s “okay” for me to do the same.

The public destroys the productivity of the pond. This is known as “The Tragedy of the Commons”

The active user rational is “everyone is abusing the resource so don’t blame me.”

What is the solution?

-The gov’t can make the resource into private land/resource or if the gov’t does take control of it they can sell permits to the land/resource.

Tragedy of the Commons

The Tragedy of the Commons argument is that shared resources tend inevitably

to be overused and ruined. The term comes from a paper written by Garrett Hardin, 1968.
